SWITCHING YOUR BABY FROM FORMULA FED TO BREAST FED
Switching your baby to breastfeeding can be difficult. To ensure a healthy transition follow the steps below.
- Talk to the baby’s healthcare provider before switching
- Monitor baby’s feeding on the formula
- Day 1-3: reduce formula by 1oz for the entire day
Day 4-6: reduce another 1oz
Day 7-9: reduce 1-2oz
Monitor dirty and wet diapers throughout the reduction of the formula. If it is normal, then do not exceed this amount of supplement each day. If your baby wants to eat more put to breast only. Continue reducing every 2-3 days as long as everything else is normal (weight gain, dippers ect.). If not normal, spend several more days’ and reduce at a slower pace. Monitor your baby’s growth every week and after you completely switched over to breastfeeding. Make sure your baby’s weight gain is normal. Always keep baby’s healthcare professional informed.
